Fixed term, full-time (1.0FTE) contract for 12 months

The School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Sciences brings together the internationally acclaimed and contemporary disciplines of molecular & cellular biology; ecology & environmental sciences; and genetics & evolution, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education, training and research with both national relevance and global outreach and networks in the public and private sectors.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for developing and testing a CRISPR activation (CRISPRa) approach to viral control, initially using in vitro cell culture models with possible subsequent work in mouse models of virus infection. The role will require genetic and molecular manipulation of CRISPRa components, in vitro cultivation of mammalian cells and viral infections in a PC2 laboratory setting.

The role will be responsible for undertaking laboratory activities associated with the project, ensuring the laboratory is operating according to relevant standard operating procedures and risk assessments and ensuring the laboratory housekeeping is maintained in an appropriate manner conducive to research outputs. The Research Assistant will work closely with the research lead and broader team to drive outputs in the laboratory and communicate outcomes accordingly.

To be successful you will need:

  1. Demonstrated ability to work in a PC2 laboratory.
  2. Ability to work independently to contribute to research projects with effective design and development.
  3. Highly developed communication and time management skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve outcomes.
  4. Experience in molecular biology/virology techniques (e.g. PCR, restriction enzyme cloning, DNA extraction, RNA extraction, IVT mRNA production, real-time qPCR).
  5. Have experience and a knowledge of CRISPRa and CRISPR12a multiplexing systems.
  6. Demonstrated experience in lentivirus production, handling of pathogenic viruses and infections using in vitro cell culture models.
  7. Strong data management skills and the ability to provide written reports to support Laboratory management and research outputs.
  8. Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.
