(HEO7) $98,343 - $109,989 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.

Full time, fixed term position for 36 months.

Working in collaboration with the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources, the Specialist Technical Officer (Exterres) will provide support to SET academic staff, students and industry partners who undertake research in the Extra-Terrestrial Environment Simulation (Exterres) Laboratory, Analogue Site and Covered Regolith Terrain facility.

The role will include the design and operation of specialist equipment to simulate Lunar and Martian surface environments.  Such facilities include regolith simulant pits, regolith thermal vacuum chambers, cryogenic testing facilities, virtual reality motion platform, motion capture systems, robotic assets, and solar simulators.

In collaboration with researchers and the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology Technical Services Team, the Specialist Technical Officer (Exterres) will assist with the design, development, commission and maintenance of bespoke test equipment and instrumentation while implementing documentation and quality assurance processes to ensure researchers obtain robust data fulfilling their research aims. The Specialist Technical Officer (Exterres) will also contribute to research papers which showcase the Exterres facilities.

 

To be successful you will need:

  • Graduate-level knowledge in the design and prototyping of mechanical and robotic equipment.
  • Experience of numerical analysis software such as finite element or computational fluid dynamics.
  • Skills in creating professional technical drawings and design specifications.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication tools including hand tools, 3D printers, and laser cutters.
  • Proficiency in coding with languages like Python, C, LabView, Matlab, and ROS.
  • Strong ability to implement HSW management systems and safety protocols in laboratory environments.

This position requires a valid Working with Children Check.
