(Level B) - $111,031 per annum plus an employer contribution of up to 17% superannuation will apply.

Fixed term position for 2 years (possibility of extension to 3 years).

Build your research career within the School of Computer Science and contribute to an innovative project in Multi-Object Tracking and Robotics.

Be part of a research team investigating new multi-drone trajectory planning for multiple target tracking with a distributed sensor network.

This is an opportunity for a high-achieving postdoctoral researcher to join a world-leading research group in Computer Security and Machine Learning as well as Computer Science department ranked 48th in the world and The University of Adelaide ranked in the top 1% of Universities worldwide. Notably, Adelaide is ranked the third most liveable city in the world and the most liveable city in Australia in 2021.

The University of Adelaide is a member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight research-intensive universities and ranks inside the world’s top 100. In the Australian Government’s 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment, 100% of University of Adelaide research was rated world-class or above, with work in 41 distinct fields achieving the highest possible rating of ‘well above world-standard’. This included Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The project will involve new inter-disciplinary collaborations with researchers from Industry in South Australia and interstate collaborations with institutions involved in multi-target tracking. This should provide significant benefits, such as new theoretical frameworks with provable performance guarantees for multi-drone tasking involving tracking multiple targets and exposure to working with and forging new relationships with Industry interested in multi-target tracking solutions and applications.

The discoveries to come out of the project will significantly increase our understanding of planning under uncertainty for multi-target tracking. This project represents a unique opportunity to produce future expertise for the Australian workforce, not only in university research, but also in industry.

The successful applicant will develop innovative multi-drone planning for tracking algorithms for use in real-world applications under uncertain, dynamic and noisy measurement environments.

To be successful at Level A you will need:

  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) OR equivalent industry experience in
    • Robotics
    • Signal Processing/Control
    • Path Planning/Trajectory Planning
    • Multi-Target Tracking/Multi-Object Tracking,
    • Bayesian Filtering, Radom Finite Set filters or closely related multi-target tracking approaches
    • NeRF
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to tailor communication skills when interacting with students, researchers, professional staff and external stakeholders.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience, both orally and written.
  • A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners.
  • Programming experience and expertise in Python and/or Julia and/or Matlab and/or C++.

In addition to the above, to be successful for Level B you will also need:

Experience in state estimation, target tracking, and data fusion algorithms such as Kalman filtering, Particle filtering, and Multiple-hypothesis tracking.

  • A strong track record of high quality research as evidenced by publications in leading journals and at conferences.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and development with limited supervision.
  • The ability to work as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners.
