The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, University of Adelaide, seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to a CRCP (Cooperative Research Centres Projects) funded project on no- and low-alcohol (NOLO) wines. This project aims to produce, market and sell NOLO wines that exceed consumer expectations through co-operative research between industry stakeholders (from across the supply chain) and academia. The appointment will be for the term of the research project which is three years.

We invite applications for a Post-doctoral position to lead the Bioengineering Pillar of the CRCP project. The successful candidate is a self-motivated individual, who is willing to conduct quantitative and qualitative research to (a) identify and evaluate microorganisms and biological compounds to increase microbial stability of no- and low-alcohol (NOLO) wines, (b) evaluate microorganisms and enzymes that can increase flavour in these products during primary fermentation and/or after dealcoholisation, and (c) evaluate processes and microorganisms that can contribute to reduce wine acidity in NOLO wines.

The role will also comprise project management, fieldwork, domestic and international travel, collaboration with the project stakeholders, co-supervision of research students and/or technical staff, workshop participation, and preparation of reports and peer-reviewed publications. Given the multidisciplinary scope of the project, the successful candidate needs to be able to interact with other researchers and technical staff in the areas of oenology, sensory science, and wine marketing.

The position is based at the School of Agriculture, Food & Wine, one of several Schools in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology, at the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide. The Waite campus hosts a world-class concentration of scientific research, education, and product conferring capability, with appropriate infrastructure and resources.

 

To be successful you will need:

1. PhD in microbiology, viticulture and oenology, food microbiology, or other relevant discipline

2. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of molecular biology

3. Demonstrated ability to work independently under broad direction, to manage a research project and work effectively with multi-disciplinary research teams

4. Excellent skills in written and oral communication to a range of audiences, and peer-reviewed publications

5. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and complete reports and manuscripts in a timely manner

6. Evidence of supervisory skills with a preference for those with experience supervising Honours, Masters and/or PhD students

7. Willingness and ability to work across several participant organisations (including regional and interstate), potentially requiring periods
