This postdoctoral researcher will conduct cutting edge research in seismic interpretation, sedimentology, and stratigraphy in order to solve problems in interpreting the evolution of the Cooper-Eromanga Basin that are of direct relevance to the petroleum industry, for both locating suitable sites for subsurface gas storage and finding subtle natural gas accumulations. The research will involve backstripping of seismic profiles in order to improve understanding of the role of syntectonic movements on the architecture of Permian strata, and to develop subsurface models.
It is expected that the successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in ASPER, and engage with stakeholders in government and industry.
The role will be research-focused (80%), with an expectation of some contribution to teaching and School business (e.g. external engagement), with opportunities for leadership and skills development.
To be successful you will need:
- A higher degree (PhD or equivalent) in sedimentary geology, with a specialisation in at least one of these areas of expertise: sedimentology and stratigraphy of subsurface siliciclastic strata; seismic interpretation of sedimentary basins; subsurface data analysis including well log analysis and correlation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work constructively within a team that includes research students, postdoctoral researchers, senior academic staff, professional staff and collaborators that include professional geoscientists and engineers from industry and government, and under the direction of a supervisor.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Evidence of ability to undertake, complete and write-up scientific research, such as publications in peer-reviewed journals.
