The Grant-funded Researcher (A) will work to support the project “Smart design technology enabling the mid infrared revolution”
The successful applicant will work as part of the Fibres and Photonics Materials research group at the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing within the School of Physical Sciences on a new ARC funded project looking at the development of complex optical fibre structures for mid-infrared guidance. The project has two main tasks; practical development of the fibre structures needed to tailor light guidance and; looking at developing a mathematical toolkit that can better understand glass flow to improve workflows for the creation of new structures in this project and beyond.
Due to these diverse tasks the project would best be suited to a candidate with background in one or more of the following research areas - mathematical modelling, fibre fabrication, optical science/photonics. The applicant will have the opportunity to broaden their skillset through training in the other research areas during the project.
You will work in close collaboration with the US-based IRflex Corporation, one of the world leaders in mid-infrared optical fibres on this industry-driven project, as well as researchers in the School of Mathematical Sciences and the University of South Australia.
The vision of the Institute of Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) is to pursue a transdisciplinary approach that brings together experimental physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers, mathematicians, biologists and medical researchers to create new sensing and measurement technologies in order to solve major challenges.
To be successful you will need:
- PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in materials science/engineering, optical science, mathematics or a related discipline.
- A commitment to research excellence in optical fibre development and/or mathematical modelling of viscous fluid flows.
- Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with professional and industry bodies, government and members of the community.
